What is Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR)?
I am very excited to be offering this cutting-edge treatment at The Therapy Space Chelmsford.
EMDR is an integrative, NICE recommended psychotherapy approach that is supported by extensive research and proven to be effective for the treatment of trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder. It is now used to treat other emotional disorders.
It is a form of therapy that focuses on memories of traumatic and/or stressful experiences.
Using an eight-phase approach, EMDR helps move stuck memories to a part of the brain where they can be fully in the past. Emotional and physical changes take place with EMDR and this can happen very quickly.
During EMDR therapy sessions you will be supported to recall a traumatic event and at the same time receive bilateral stimulation. This means receiving stimuli in a rhythmic left-right pattern. The stimuli can be something you see, feel or hear
For example, bilateral stimulation might involve: - moving your eyes from side to side - tapping movements on different sides of your body - tones you hear through one ear then the other wearing headphones.
Sessions are usually 60-90 minutes in duration. The recommended amount of sessions will depend upon the severity and nature of the trauma/ psychological problem and will be collaboratively agreed with you.
