What is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)?
Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is a National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) recommended, collaborative psychotherapy that enables you to understand, identify and change your thought processes and behaviours that can lead to distressing feelings.
CBT is commonly used to treat depression and anxiety disorders including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) health anxiety, generalised anxiety disorder (GAD), obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), phobias and panic disorder.
Cognitive behavioural therapy is usually short-term (between 6-20 sessions). The focus is to support people to manage depression and/or anxiety. It is a present-focused therapy in that the CBT therapist will focus on treating what is going on in your current life.
CBT places an emphasis on helping you to learn to be your own therapist. You will be supported to learn coping skills in the session as well practicing these through out of session tasks. The main goal from CBT therapy is to learn to identify and change your thoughts/beliefs, emotional reactions and behaviours.
